IMAP to get email?

I was wondering whether or not there is a way I can use secure IMAP (over SSL: port 993) to retrieve my mail?  I am concerned about all the plaintext passwords (POP, forums, etc.).  My ssh over windows has been unreliable and I have my e-mail on my Windows box instead of on linux for administrative reasons.

I wish we could offer some type of IMAP service, but it does not mate up properly with our VMail sub-systems...

I've tried several times to get IMAP to work, as I had a specific project that needed it, but could not get it to integrate into our system...
