Command Line Editor

I would like to use VI as my command line editor.
How do I modify .bash_profile to achieve this?

I added
export EDITOR=vi

to .bash_profile

but it didn't work. Was I supposed to put a semicolon
after it or something?

Unfortunately, when I changed .bash_profile to read

EDITOR=/bin/vi

I still didn't get vi as my command line editor. Even after
I logged off and logged back on.

Do I need to put it in a particular place in .bash_profile?
Right now it is the last line. Number 14.

Thanks,
jon

I just logged in as you and tested it...

It's working as expected...

to test:
$crontab -e

It uses the EDITOR variable to find out which editor to use and it pulls up vi...

Yes, I did. Sorry that wasn't clear.

export EDITOR=/bin/vi

is what it says.

When I run that command from my id I get the following

[jbroder@FQ-Taz:~/www ]$ $crontab -e
bash: -e: command not found

[jbroder@FQ-Taz:~/www ]$

So maybe there is something fishy here...
