Yup. If you have it redirecting to your own error page which isn't named 404.html, there's no reason to keep the not-in-use 404.html. For example, my File Not Found error page is Nuts.shtml.
ErrorDocument can be a mighty handy thing too, as it can redirect just about anywhere you want. You can set it up to redirect to a script in your cgi-bin, or a file in any other directory. Another example, all my error pages live in the /etc directory (ErrorDocument 404 /etc/Nuts.shtml is the magic line). If you're overprotective of your errors, check out Apache Guardian at
www.xav.com/scripts/guardian . It'll redirect errors to a cgi script which emails you every time there's a problem (so you can find broken links, track abusers, etc...)
