So, once I have this nifty .htaccess up and running the way I'd like, is it okay (wise) to get rid of my (old) custom 404.html page? The .htaccess calls up custom pages for 404 and 403 errors, as well as denies directory browsing.

Yup. If you have it redirecting to your own error page which isn't named 404.html, there's no reason to keep the not-in-use 404.html. For example, my File Not Found error page is Nuts.shtml.

ErrorDocument can be a mighty handy thing too, as it can redirect just about anywhere you want. You can set it up to redirect to a script in your cgi-bin, or a file in any other directory. Another example, all my error pages live in the /etc directory (ErrorDocument 404 /etc/Nuts.shtml is the magic line). If you're overprotective of your errors, check out Apache Guardian at www.xav.com/scripts/guardian . It'll redirect errors to a cgi script which emails you every time there's a problem (so you can find broken links, track abusers, etc...)

Long answer to a short question... I'm done now
