Password Protection Page

Here is a page that I've created to help with some of these password protection questions. It's still under development, but what's there works.

I am assuming that this is for the FutureQuest server only, right? Just making sure, as the instructions would only apply here, as far as the paths go, etc.

Just sticking my nose where it doesn't belong

Thanks Mike for that writeup...

This should help in the interim as I'm busily writing a CNC applet for password protecting directories/files...

Full tracking is down in the Alpha/Beta/Gamma board...

When I get some time, I will help you expand on what you have written for the inclusion of 'groups' and also DBM Hash storage methods...

There is a technique for combining 'user/group' information into 1 DBM Hash file for super-fast lookups...

htpasswd files are only good for upto 50 users, then they become very expensive in resources to scan the files... DBM Hash's were designed for 50+ users, but easily handle user counts of any size...

FQuest's newest project will utilize a centralized SQL database, capable of handling 10's of thousands of user/group combinations - with the front-end CNC tools to manage your domain's user/groups/passwords along with the file/directory matings...

My time has been focused on building the server core, because I acknowledge that setting up password restrictions is a royal pita to do on a Web server... Even when you outline the procedures step-by-step...

In Conclusion: Thanks Mike for your efforts, they are truly appreciated!

Just wondering if Apache has an easy way with the .htaccess method of allowing access with only a password, and not a username????
Or do I gotta write a script for that?

(sadly my current Apache book is V1.1.1)
if there's a spot on the Apache site just say so & I'll go ahunting.....

None that I'm aware of... It relies on finding the password based upon a hash lookup via the username...

Great stuff Mike..I'd like to see a similar page for FQ users on custom 403/404/etc, pages and also on a related topic, how to keep folks from directory browsing where there is no index.html file, and how to direct the snoops to a custom page also. I got mine working with the help of ya'll here, but not without a lot of conflaguration (is that a word?)

Deb made a FAQ, but I had some trouble following it...maybe it was lack of caffeine/alcohol/endorphins/or all of the above :p

I'll try and come up with a help file for the things that you mentioned.
