Mailed-by versus from in mailing lists

Some list members have messages end up in spam. I suggested adding the list address as a contact. But would the list address to add as contact be:

mailinglist@mydomain.org

or

lists.mydomain.org?

In the message headers, messages are mailed by lists.mydomain.org and the from field varies depending on which moderator sent the message. Would the list address work as contact given the different senders?

Thanks for any clarification or suggestions!

Erica

Re: Mailed-by versus from in mailing lists

I don't think asking the list members to add the lists.mydomain.org contact will help, if that isn't what's in the From address. I think they'd need to add whatever is in the From line, so if those are different moderator email addresses, they'd probably have to add each moderator as a contact.

If the users are more technically sophisticated, they could add an email filter rule to their email programs to allow *@mydomain.org or *@lists.mydomain.org, but I imagine if they could do that they probably would have already.

Checking that Domain Keys and SPF are enabled in your CNC Email Manager for your domain might help get through spam filters, though I'm not sure how well that works with mailing lists (ie if the From address isn't from the same domain name, it might actually cause problems).

Anyway, just a few ideas - it's been a few years since I last sent a mailing list email, so my knowledge is a bit rusty!

Rusty or not the response was very helpful. It confirmed my understanding of the problem and gave me new ideas. Plus I had someone else read what you wrote and he had some other suggestions.

It turns out that Gmail at least has a way to filter messages going to
mailinglist@mydomain.org and say never send to spam. If I understand that correctly, any message going to the mailing list address won't go to spam. That way it wouldn't matter which moderator sent the message.

It's something to try anyway.

Thanks again!

Ooh yes, of course! I just realized I do that myself with the Postbox & Thunderbird email programs, which also let you add filter rules based on the To or CC fields. Brilliant solution, glad you found it Erica!

Re: Mailed-by versus from in mailing lists

Thanks! I just sent out a document to the mailing list describing in detail how to create a filter in Gmail. I took screenshots of each step. I think even the tech-hesitant people on the list might be able to manage this.

It's reassuring to know that Thunderbird can filter by the To field too. I'm glad I stopped in at the forums before sending out my message.
