SFTP download slowdown ?

My ssh log file (approx. 270MB) used to download in a few seconds (don't remember the actual download rate). The last couple of days it's started taking > 4 minutes, with the download rate mostly at 1.0MB/S but occasionally 1.1MB/S.

I've run two different speed tests showing the following download speeds:
#1 = 214Mb/s (26.75 MB/s)
#2 = 190Mb/s (23.75 MB/s)

Is there some kind of throttling going on with SFTP downloads? I tried downloading an 8MB file and got the same results, so it's not the file size causing the slowdown.

Thanks for any ideas.

Re: SFTP download slowdown ?

We have not made any changes that would affect SFTP performance.

Re: SFTP download slowdown ?

Thanks Kevin. Just tried it again, and it's back to 24.0MB/s in 11 seconds.

On a related matter, I understand the need on some TLS sites to NEVER delete anything from the logs, but mine is certainly not one of them. Is there any possibility of letting us volunteer to have our logs "trimmed" to maybe the last 6 months? This would also save FutureQuest some disk space!

I just use mine for statistics, and Webalizer keeps a one year history. If I notice some kind of spike or irregularity, I might look at the actual log records, but this would always be within a week or so after it occurs.

Re: SFTP download slowdown ?

The http and https logs are handled differently due to the https engines occasionally breaking during a nightly auto-rotation. Our solution is that we only rotate it when it is approaching the max log file size of 2GB. Once the file is rotated it is named access.yyyymmdd.gz and you can then delete them if you want.

Due to the fairly recent trend of many sites to go https only it is likely that we will revisit this system in the future.
