Re: 2018/2019 Update
Paypal docs are so full of legacy stuff it's even more confusing than it used to be. Even the names of the various services are not clear and the descriptions are clouded in marketing speak. On the other hand, the documentation is way better once you find it, and since it's been around so long the Stack Exchange is likely to have answers to any question. But the answers are sometimes disappointing. Paypal still has plenty of stuff well-designed but not working.
I noticed some comments saying "I'm just going to use Stripe!"
How is Square working out for you?
My project where I got back into Paypal was for subscriptions. One advantage of Paypal is some buyers like it because it seems safe. And for developers there are many choices. But just as an example of the things you don't figure out till you get into it, subscriptions seem to require the customer join Paypal (which makes sense for recurring payments) and use a credit card not their Paypal balance (which makes less sense). This is true at least in Sandbox, which has its own longstanding issues.
