domain harvesting tricks

This really %^&^% me off big.

I got to two mails that my system considers spam, but it contained the message that the .com version of our domain (.org) becomes available.

I check it through network solutions whois lookup: lo and behold, it indeed is available.

I don't want to fall in the hands of spammers or sharks nor work ever with networksolutions again, so I login into my regular domain registrar (namecheap). Register xx.com verion: domain is not available !?

So what is going on here and is this legal? Either a domain is available and I should be able to register it through my own registrar or it is in hands of another and they offer it for sale but saying it is available and then not being able to register it?

Re: domain harvesting tricks

If you really want the domain I would go ahead and register it through NetSol for 1 year and 61 days after getting the domain transfer it to your Regular Domain Registrar.

Also that way you can go through the whole process with NetSol and see how much it is going to "really" cost...

Re: domain harvesting tricks

I don't really think that it would make that much difference to our traffic to have it, but it would be better. The thing is, I am also afraid that once I show interest the moment I register the price will be higher. The one thing I also do not like is that network solutions does not show prices for domain names at the main page. Did find it but they ask $$35 for a domain while namecheap is charging a lot less with $4 and active-domain $ 3.

So as usually, network solutions is a rip-off even before I start showing interest. I know I am paranoid here, but am I paranoid enough?

Re: domain harvesting tricks

I did check a bit further, the domain is actually in the redemptionPeriod and parked by GoDaddy. Anybody worked with this before, some sharks try a quicky to snap up this domain is there is interest enough and sell it expensive?

What is the best strategy here, just sit tight and hope nobody will snap it up or contact godaddy or work through network solutions?
