It would be nice if they took the step of cloning your drive over to a new one if a problem was detected. I don't think this is typical however (but I haven't dealt with Acer).

I've had odd issues... e.g. a drive that wouldn't read until I turned it upside down and then it ran long enough to read the data and clone it over to another drive.

That's what I was thinking when I thought they erased everything. Then some time in the future I may want to do data recovery. They could offer to sell me the drive with my data or upload it somewhere. I'm saving my previous computer's 40GB 5M Ultra ATA hard drive in case I ever decide to recover a few files that weren't backed up, but I don't know what if anything is wrong with that drive.
