Notepad++ Editor

For those of you looking for a nice simple text editor for Windows with lots of featured geared towards coders, and free, checkout Notepad++ if you haven't already!

http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

I just started using it to clean up some longer perl code, and I love
the way it color codes everything making it easier to check.

So, if you are looking for something better then the normal notepad, go get Notepad++ now!

Did I mention it's free!

John

Re: Notepad++ Editor

Yeah, I love this tool. I use the "Consolas" font as I think it gives the best appearance. Also look at Notepad2 as a replacement for the default notepad that ships with Windows.

Re: Notepad++ Editor

Thanks Johnfl86 - I'm giving it a spin myself as I'm not a big fan of the UltraEdit upgrade treadmill not to mention it gets more and more bloated with each revision...

Re: Notepad++ Editor

I don't use Windows much so I don't use Notepad++ much either. In fact I am a big fan of vim for text editing. But when I am in Windows I do use Notepad++.

Since Terra brought up upgrading I will point out that Notepad++ is wonderful at that. Occasionally when I run it I get a dialog box saying that there is a new version and asking me if I want to download it. I say "yes" and continue about my business. A minute or so later I get another dialog saying that Notepad++ is running and asking if I want to close it to finish the upgrade. I always say no and the upgrade is put into place as soon as I exit the file I am looking at.

So, even though I have never actually used it for anything really important it is a great program and it is pretty much as good as it gets in terms of auto-updates in the Windows world.

Re: Notepad++ Editor

Thanks very much John. I still like EditPlus, but this looks quite good. Thanks.

But you can bet that if I open up a Cygwin session I will be using vim in it. Once you install Cygwin you never use cmd.exe again.

Re: Notepad++ Editor

I've got (and paid for) the UltraEdit/UltraCompare suite. Mostly love them. I've set my Windows computers to use UltraEdit in place of Notepad (for example, when I view source in Internet Explorer).

There are a few quirks which I have to come to grips with. Changing the default color (green text on a white background) in the SSH window is challenging (the instructions don't seem to match what's on the interface -- probably several versions out of date). The SSH window itself is an oddy -- every time I switch applications UltraEdit gets the focus instead of the SSH window. And I haven't got it to the point yet where I can simply paste in multibyte characters in UTF-8 mode. There always seem to be a few steps I have to jump through to get them to display correctly.

Apart from that, a very good pair of tools with a very fast launch time.
