Large capacity optical backup media?

Are there any interesting optical backup solutions on the horizon for large capacity backups?

Currently I have around 5TB of photos to backup. My strategy is to periodically write to 2TB hard drives and store these offline (powered off) and in a different location.

In years past, I liked the idea of having a backup on an optical media, but haven't been able to do that since 2006 when I found 200 DVDRs difficult to deal with.

I see there is now BDXL that holds up to 100/128 GB but the discs are extremely expensive (10x hard drive price in the google shopping results.) Even the 50 GB blu-ray discs are pricey.

Any other interesting optical backup solutions on the horizon?

Re: Large capacity optical backup media?

I prefer to backup to a separate system. My backup server at home currently has 4TB of space and I am about to have to expand it.

I have looked into the 25 and 50GB BluRay discs and I just don't think they are cost effective yet. I do know someone who is using them for backups of photos but he just doesn't have the capacity that I deal with (mostly video data).
