Re: tablet for web developers
Well, continuing my "ipad newbie blog post"
Overall I still love the ipad's touch screen, but some things I wish were better.
1.) When I connect it via the supplied cable to my workstation's usb port, a folder appears with my ipad media. I can copy out of it, but I can't write anything directly to it. Instead it seems I have to add a file like a pdf to my itunes library and then drag or sync it to my ipad. It feels very cumbersome if I simply want to use my ipad to reference a PDF. I don't understand why it wouldn't have a simple "sandbox" folder that you could read and write to and use as a normal file system from browsers on the ipad to upload from, etc.
2.) speaking of the connection itself, for some reason the ipad has a white apple cable that has a power block that then connects to a standard usb connection that then connects to what I believe is a proprietary apple long connector on the ipad itself. I would much prefer it if the ipad had a standard universal usb connection on it. This way I have to bring the one special apple cable along anywhere I want to connect (charge) the ipad up. It's even a pain if I want to charge it in multiple rooms. Not to mention I wish it had a simple usb port on it to be able to copy files off someone's thumbdrive or connect and grab photos off my camera via its standard usb cable.
3.) speaking of pdfs, I'm not sure what to make of ibooks. I had to search a 1200 page technical pdf that I wanted to refer to on my ipad while doing disassemble of a machine. Ended up jumping to reader to find the right page which happened to be 887 and much quicker to find in reader's search. Then I find on ibooks there isn't even a "go to page"... instead I have to drag the scroller until I get there, once I manage to tap right to get it to come up. Not a big fan of ibooks, but maybe I'll get used to it.
Overall though the ipad is a great little device for browsing and general quick status checks.
