Chromium OS Builds by Hexxeh

http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

Well, it's Alpha. It's very, very Alpha. For example, the shutdown command is via a terminal window.

Of all the old, beat PCs around my office, it took four tries to find one that would boot from a USB memory stick. (To be fair, Chrome OS is not aimed at old hardware.)

Log-in is via your GMail account ID! Doh! It took me a minute to realize that, and then once I did it made a world of sense. (No, I didn't read the source code to make sure the guy is not stealing my GMail ID ... )

It will be fun to follow this product as it matures over the next few months. I'm assuming that with Gears, the machine is not completely useless when it's not connected to the internet. (I spent four days over the New Year's holiday with no internet connection. I wrote 3,100 words. I think these facts are strongly related.)

Wireless support is still lacking. I think that will prove to be a pretty fundamental requirement for the potential user base for this thing.

I'm an infrastructure guy (among my many hats). It would be rather a change for me to wholly embrace cloud computing. But I can see a lot of advantages.
