Google Promote and Remove icons

Anyone know anything about the new "Promote" and "Remove" icons that are now showing up on Google Search listings???

Re: Google Promote and Remove icons

I had read of these some time ago and do recall the functions for personal search but can't find the original source where I read it. Neither is it mentioned anywhere in their official "search features" so they must just be rolling it out on a limited experimental basis. I haven't seen these icons in any of my searches yet.

When you click "promote" you add weight to that entry in all your searches so it will appear higher in the results.

When you click "remove" that result will not appear in any of your searches.

These features are very helpful if you do a lot of searching in one limited area where equivocation or other factors are producing a lot of "junk" results.

Re: Google Promote and Remove icons

OK - so it only effects "my" searching, and know one else's. I was afraid it might be anyone, and I didn't think they would let just anyone say that a listing should be removed.

I also just found this page a google:

http://www.google.com/support/bin/an...764&topic=8994

It says pretty much the same as Andilinks, with a little more detail.

Thanks!

John

Re: Google Promote and Remove icons

I'm sure they will use the number of promotes in the search algorithm. You have to be logged in to your google account though to see it and use it.
Your competition could leave fraudulent 'notes' and say something like 'awful site, sells fake goods'. Unless you happen to view all notes on every search you wouldn't even know.
A simple promote system with no user notes would have been better, so people can only give positive feedback like here with the 'Notability'. My brother runs a jewellery site and already his competition has added a note which is obviously from themselves, not what the 'wiki notes' were intended for.
