How can I create a searchable database?

My knowledge of databases of any kind is zero.

I have been asked to create an online database of music teachers in my city. Can someone point me in the right direction? Something I can easily install on my FQ hosted domain?

MySQL is already a part of your FQ package. You'll need more direction than I can provide but that link and this one are a good place to start.

Re: How can I create a searchable database?

Thanks, Andi. Helpful as ever.

As I say, I know nothing about mysql or databases but I use them. I've installed vbulletin and recently installed pixelpost. I don't know how they work but they just work. What I'm hoping is that there's something canned I can just install, configure the fields I need and start entering the information. Then visitors can look stuff up . . . search the database by instrument, name, location, etc., etc.

Maybe this easy solution doesn't exist but I'm guessing it does.

Or perhaps I can contract someone to install and set this up if the price is right. If I don't find anything I can do myself I'll try the Contract or be Contracted forum.

Re: How can I create a searchable database?

If you are looking for something simpler, you may consider a Google Spreadsheet with a Table Gadget.

You create the document as a spreadsheet in Google Documents (table with rows and columns with the first row as a header - also like excel spreadsheet).

Then you a the Google Table Gadget to the spreadsheet, and define the cell range to use. Then you publish the gadget and it gives you code to place on your website.

Every time you update and re-publish the spreadsheet, it updates on your website as well automatically. If you add additional entries - you need to update the cell range in the Gadget, so all the items will show.

Hopefully I haven't confused you too much, I can't seem to find a good tutorial for doing this online.

The first script that comes to mind is the one that FQ use themselves to run net-sleuth.com. There is a free version that you could always start out with. If some of the other features are useful, then it's $25 or $75.

I know I am a broken record, but, I speak the truth! Expression Engine will do exactly this for you. It's a really great piece of software, and you may qualify for a non profit or personal use.... depending on the specifics of your usage. Anyway, their video introductions are worth a million dollars, really shows you how you can do pretty much anything you want. create any kind of database without knowing all the details of php etc. Take a look at the video tutorials and see if you think it might work for you. Oh, and you can download a free version that is quite robust and may suit your needs completely.

I've done a number of installs and am very happy with the product.

Ever since its creation, the global telecom industry has seen continuous change. From the early telegraph and voice communication systems to over-the-top (OTT) content, the industry has grown, changed and advanced more than just about any other type of business.
