What I did on my last hiatus
Actually it is more like what I didn't do which is most everything that requires a working dominant hand. Broke it really good and then the post-surgery turned out to be far worse than the accident.
Its often difficult to read x-rays unless you know what you are doing, but not in these before/after examples:
before: http://www.unconcho.com/mybustedhand1.jpg
After: http://www.unconcho.com/mybustedhand4.jpg --looks like an alien implant with subspace communication ability. But notice how perfectly untouched the ulna remained.
The hand still doesn't work right but I eventually had to get back to my day job. The up side is I get an extra bar on my cell phone.

Best of luck with it, so glad you're back in action. Should we call you bionic George now?

Here's an x-ray of a healthy hand for comparison. To a layman, your break looks like a couple of small fractures.
I think I have plantar fasciitis. You'll probably heal before me.

Re: What I did on my last hiatus
There was a lot of splintering, sort of like a broken tree branch. But the break has actually long since healed. The problem is the the entire hand froze up after the surgery because she had to temporarily pull all the tendons out of the way to put the hardware in. They tell me it will be a year of hand therapy before the thing gets back to normal. But you are still right...
Another up-side is I only count 5 fingers.

So, were you just hitting the Any key a little too hard, or something more interesting?

He was attacked by a ladder, which some people might consider interesting. I'd call it abject terror.
But that was six months ago, George! You've been out of action all this time?

I took a couple months off with the remainder being "light duty". Which means I pretty much had only enough left-handed keystrokes in a given day to do only what had to be done or which nobody else could do. I switched my mouse to a left handed track ball for a while. And yes I'm right handed.

I fell off a ladder from about 10 feet up, onto the driveway and broke the fall with my hand. I was getting my old house ready to sell when I tried to toss a board onto a 2nd story deck and the ladder's leg broke. I misjudged how fast the ladder was coming down --I thought it would be one of those slow twisting collapses so I stuck my hand out to break my fall.
I knew instantly that my work there was done. Girlfriend drove me to the ER --first time I didn't have to wait in the triage room.

Oh no! Are you right handed? I broke four fingers in my left hand last summer (with a fifth break across one of them) but it wasn't anything like that, mine healed up smoothly without intervention.
