I need a new chair

I want a new office chair, but that's not really what I want. I'm looking for a comfortable chair that just so happens to work as an office chair (and I define that term loosely). Something that would be good for reading a book or just plain relaxing, whether I'm sitting at a desk or not.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I guess it depends how you work, but I've found I use different chairs for working and relaxing/reading. The work chair focuses on good posture (while still being comfy), whereas when I'm reading I'll often lie on a lounge chair or on my bed. But maybe that's just me.

I've never sat in one, but I keep hearing that La-Z-Boy chairs are extremely comfortable....

I just think it's silly that I'll spend the better part of the day sitting at the computer, but when I want to relax and get comfortable I get up and sit somewhere else. Seems like I should be the most comfortable where I spend most of my time.

Good posture is all well and good, but a chair that lets me lean back won't tempt me to slouch in the first place. I might go with an "executive" chair like the one I have at work. But I remember years ago someone was selling a computer chair that was more like a chaise lounge. I'm always at the keyboard, so it's not like I need to swivel or roll around the room.

OTOH, I can't afford to spend $3,000 on a chair.

I recall LightGuide has a side business turning recliners into computer chairs. But they're a little big for the space I've got.

Unless you have your monitor mounted high up on the wall and angled down, expect to have a pretty stiff neck by the end of the day.

Two very different types of comfort. I wouldn't try combining/compromising them or you'll most likely end upwith something that is moderately acceptable at both but not particularly great at either.

I've got a highly adjustable (and wall-mountable) LCD monitor. I know I'll have to make compromises, but I'm also ready to radically rearrange the "desk" -- currently composed of two typing tables set back to back -- to suit whatever kind of chair I get.

Maybe not even have a desk at all. In an ideal world the monitor and keyboard would be mounted on an adjustable arm -- maybe something like this.

This one might be a bit much.

I think this is the one I remember reading about: http://www.officeorganix.com/netsurf1.htm. Definitely out of my price range.

It's a good thing that I'm allergic to power tools, because that is one ugly chair. Makes my typing-table setup look positively elegant.

I found the Leap WorkLounge yesterday, but there was no price and I read it was displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, so I figured it would be out of your price range. Today I found this page listing a price of $1,398, and they're in CT. This page gives you the best pictures, and this seems to be from the manufacturer's website.

No coincidence the only computing done in those pictures is on a laptop.

Looks comfy. But $1,400 is out of my price range too -- and that doesn't even include the ottoman.

Office-type recliners do exist. I've seen them. But while you can find all kinds of desk chairs at Staples in the $200-300 range, the only places selling recliners seem to be iffy web sites with brands I've never heard of.

Unless I want to pay $455 for an ottoman.

Never underestimate my powers of improvisation, Dan. If I had $1400 for a chair I'd be using a laptop too. That's who they're marketing it to.
