I think it looks better when the header background is the same shade of blue as the guy's pants and the large fonts. Also, I like the header when it doesn't span the entire length of the screen and is slightly rounded (or something other than square) at the ends, because of how narrow the content beneath it is. I tried them both out in MS Paint.

My original header design used the same muted color scheme as the rest of the graphics -- not blue and gold, but dusky red with a Creamsicle-orange stripe. He liked these colors better. It sorta reminds me of a paint can this way...

Now, here's where I have to disagree with you. I went full-width precisely because I like the the effect it creates on large monitors, where there's a huge amount of white space. It's one of my favorite aspects of the design -- maybe the favorite -- and most people won't even notice it because they're still running at 800 x 600.

For very large monitors, I prefer filling in the left and right with black or something, and having the header conform more to the width of the content. I did that for PoliSource when I had some free time a while back and I think it's an improvement.

That's what I tend to do myself, but I decided to try something different this time. (Same goes for the quirky adworks.php?sec=this&page=that structure.)
I think it works, anyway.

I agree that all that white space is sort of restfull. Perhaps the real question you should ask is who is it aimed at? If it is for older, more conventional rather down-home folks - it seems just right.
Best of Luck

Hi Randall,
Just one thing I had to mention - the kerning of the letters in the logo is way too narrow in my opinion. The letter "r" for example - it's squeezed between the "o" and the "k".
Could be that that's the way the logo is, and you can't do anything about it, but I just wanted to point that out.

You'll notice that the page headings are pretty tight in general. He has a thing for tight tracking -- I have no idea why.
When he asked me to recreate his old letterhead in Word, we went back and forth a lot about the kerning in that logo. This is actually a bit looser than the original, believe it or not (the antialiasing fills in the gaps somewhat so you can't really tell onscreen). I told him it was because the typefaces weren't totally identical, and he believed me.

I think it's Grrreeeat!
Randall,
I think you have done an outstanding job. It's clean, the typography makes me smile, I love the use of white space... I *really* like it. I think it will really reach it's audience -- people who do print advertising. Old school. Yum.
Congrats on a site well done my friend!
I do see one boo-boo. To the right of the logo, there is a space. Darnit, I wish I could upload an image. hmmmm. Well, there is a block of white where there should be yellow and blue stripe... like a spacer or something weird. (It's to the right of the word Contact vertical the whole height of the header). [this is with IE on a mac]
I really really like this design.

Uh-oh. Sounds like the page content is running too wide and pushing the table out -- I have that problem with Netscape 4 on the Contact page (@#$% forms). Is it consistent throughout the site?
